about

Musically, this song ended up sounding a bit like a The War on Drugs. But, when I was initially writing it on an old acoustic I thought it was a slight rip off of "Reel Around the Fountain" by The Smiths. It may be undetectable, but overall I was most heavily influenced by "Capricornia" from Allo Darlin and the prose of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

For all you recording nerds out there:

I used to record solely with Logic Pro, but these days nearly every classic feature of Logic has been included in Garageband (which is free), so when my laptop with Logic crashed back in early 2021, I reluctantly switched over to Garageband. I say 'reluctantly' because it hasn't always been the most professional DAW. In the early days it was pretty easy to tell if something was a 'Garageband' recording. There were definitely exceptions to this, for instance Widowspeak's "Harsh Realm". All that said, Garageband has improved immensely in the last few years and now... well, I'm used to it.

lyrics

"Nashville, I Nearly Killed Me"

Up again old heart
Never mind the defeat
This humiliation is only illusory

You could retreat in art and isolation, oh
But you're far too hard on yourself, oh
Just let it go

The most beautiful of souls will often walk alone

My insincerity haunted every breath I'd take
Shallow city streets awoke the worst in me
Now all these apparitions ever clamouring
Oh, oh, injury

Up again old heart
Not as alone as you think
Human separation is only illusory

A shame our greatest archetypal feats
Are laced with such disgrace and infamy

I'd like to think it's worth another verse
Would you sing it oh so sweetly to me?
I'll see you in my sleep

My insincerity haunted every breath I'd take
(Up again old heart...)
