about

“If ever my life can be of any use to you, come and claim it.” – Anton Chekhov

As I get older, I find myself venturing more and more into 'crooner' territory. Although I cringe at the thought of lounge singers in seedy Vegas night clubs, I'm definitely drawn to the romantic heyday of French chanson singers like Yves Montand and Serge Gainsbourg. Even the aesthetic of the era seems to suit me much more than the plain white walls and t-shirt/jeans combinations of today.

This song started as a simple poem, slowly evolving into a song with inspiration from Swedish composer "Penelope Red":

Lyrically, it's a attempt to express sentiments and sounds of comfort and encouragement to female bravery in the far-east. (Using the US as a point of reference.) That's as specific as I'll get. It was inspired by an individual, yet spread out like an old patchwork quilt, encompassing a world of unexpected and unfortunate events.

lyrics

“Little Activist”

Far eastern fräulein
I’ve never been an activist
Still, as I witness all your stars align
I applaud your protest

Through the heart of every heavy cloud
Your ethereal eyes retain the rays
Of sun unable to be tethered
No brutalist structure, or Soviet chain

Brave boasts/innocent inflections
You wander with an all-too-familiar ache
Unable to accept societal constraint
Why isn’t it enough?
Why isn’t it enough?
Well…

I know these feelings frighteningly well
They haunt me to this day
I sense you feel far more and more deeply
Than you’re inclined to say

Deep breaths distant darling
Fearless air through fragile frame
Your existence alone comforts many, I’m sure
What resonates will remain
